Let's Talk About Coffee Enemas




Ok ok ok I know what you are thinking, WHY put coffee in any place other than your mouth??? Trust me, I thought the same for a long while UNTIL I did my research. In June of 2020 I started having a lot of digestive issues, got diagnosed with IBS-C, and then months later diagnosed with SIBO/Candida/Parasites and gut dysbiosis. My stomach was truly a MESS for so long, it was miserable. In November, I decided to try my first colonic session, which is different from coffee enemas. Colonics are bit more intense and you can get them done by a professional. I think that was a little too much, for me, to start out with and I don’t think it’s the place to start on your healing journey, but I do think they can be beneficial once your drainage pathways are more open. ANYWAYS back to coffee enemas, after I got my breast implants out and worked on opening my drainage pathways for over a month, I was ready to do my first coffee enema. I bought the kit, was super excited, and then when it arrived, I was immediately nervous, and it sat in my bathroom closet for over a month before I got the courage to try it. But, TRUST ME, it is not as scary as it seems.


Who are coffee enemas for?

Honestly, I think everyone can benefit from coffee enemas. The average person may hold up to 10 POUNDS of non-eliminated waste in their large intestine often making your colon sluggish and inefficient leading to toxicity build up, weight gain, and a cascade of health problems. Constipation is so prevalent, but THAT DOES NOT MAKE IT NORMAL. Over the years of processed foods, chemicals, over consumption has created an encrusted build up in your colon walls allowing parasites and viruses aside. And while I do think everyone can benefit from them, I more so believe in them for those of us who are chronically ill. Especially if you are taking many supplements/medications that can cause herx reactions (die-off) because coffee enemas can immensely lessen those symptoms.


New Trend or Old History?

Contrary to popular belief, enemas have been around for A LONG TIME. It isn’t just some new fad that a wellness guru came up with to cleanse their body. Its been used since 1500 BC by Egyptian kings to maintain longevity and good health. It was practiced in ancient regions in Africa, Greece, India, China and by Native Americans. Around that time they were using water enemas, but during WWI coffee enemas came into the scene in Germany. Due to a morphine shortage, nurses began pouring leftover coffee into enema buckets, and the wounded soldiers reported pain relief! And then Dr. Max Gerson popularized coffee enemas in the 1950’s as a key part to treating CANCER.



Ok, But Why Coffee In Your Anus????

Coffee travels from the colon through your portal system to the liver. Theobromine, theophylline, and the caffeine in the coffee cause the bile ducts to relax and open, which allows the liver to let go of bile and accumulated toxins. The liver is our main organ of detoxification. Coffee enemas also stimulate glutathione in the liver by up to 700%!!!! Glutathione is a key detox enzyme and nothing else is known to increase its activity as much.


In the Gerson therapy, coffee enemas are even practiced multiple times a day and by no means am I saying you have to do that, but I do think they are a wonderful tool. For myself, I plan on doing them about once a week (and I’ll see how I feel about that schedule and adjust from there).

What If I’m Caffeine Sensitive?

I have read a lot regarding this topic, because I am truly caffeine sensitive, too. I think this varies from person to person. I like to do them first thing in the morning on an empty stomach because I think doing them at night would keep me up. After my research I have found that if you have a strong gut lining then the coffee should not get into your bloodstream or anywhere else besides your liver/colon and you won’t feel the jitteriness that coffee usually causes. But if you do have leaky gut there is a chance you may feel the effects a little stronger. And if that is the case for you instead of doing 4 tablespoons of coffee, start with 1 tsp and work your way up.


I personally started with 1 tbsp and I will say I did have some jitteriness after, but nothing crazy. You can always move up or down the next time depending on how you feel or even start with just water.

What Equipment Do You Use?

Here is the link to my Aussie Co Coffee Enema Kit and here is the coffee I like to use. It is SO IMPORTANT to use ORGANIC, MOLD FREE, CAFFEINATED coffee.


I also will link the French press I like to use, but truly you could use any.


How to:

1. Bring 4 cups of filtered water to a boil. Its easiest to do with a hot water kettle, but you could also boil on the stove. Add the water to the French press and desired amount of ORGANIC, MOLD FREE, CAFFEINATED coffee (I did 1 tbsp but the amount can be anywhere from 1 tsp-4 tbsp) to the water. Let it brew for at least 20 minutes before pressing.

2. Allow the coffee to cool down to AT LEAST body temperature. You can speed up the process by putting it in the refrigerator or freezer for a couple minutes

3. I would HIGHLY recommend taking binders 20 minutes before. I like CellCore Biotoxin Binder

4. Make a nice comfy place in the bathroom to lay down. I like to lay down towels and bring in pillow. I also light a candle and turn on a meditation or healing frequencies on my phone.

5. Ensure the clamp on the tubing is closed and pour half of the coffee (2 cups) into enema bucket/bag.

6. Prime the tubing to get air out of the tube by letting some coffee flow into the toilet.

7. Place/hang the bucket/bag 3 feet above the ground. This is so that the coffee will naturally flow from the bucket, into the tube, into you

8. Lay on your right side and lubricate the first 6 inches of the tubing with coconut oil. The easiest way for me to do this, is by adding coconut oil to a spoon and rubbing the tube on the coconut oil.

9. Take a deep breath & insert the tube and unlock the clamp and allow the coffee to slowly flow into your body. This is not a race. If you need to stop the flow for a moment, be sure to do that and breath before beginning again.

10. Once all the coffee has emptied from the bucket/bag, do not remove the tube. Allow it to stay inserted while you hold the coffee for 15-20 minutes. Your first time you probably will not be able to hold it that long and THAT’S OK. You will be able to work your way up.

11. Once you feel the urge to go, get up and evacuate bowels

12. Repeat steps 4-9 to administer the second enema. The second enema is easier and enhances the results once the bowels are more open

13. Take another round of binders 20 minutes after the final enema. Drink plenty of water to rehydrate and you could also add lemon and salt to increase absorption or Trace Minerals.



Tips:

- ALWAYS speak to your doctor, NTP, holistic health doctor, or whoever you use before starting coffee enemas

- When to do it: I personally like to do it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. But you can really do it whenever as long as it’s on an empty stomach. I’ve also read there is some benefit in doing it after your normal bowel movement because it will help you to hold it longer and get better results. But doing it right after a meal or when your bowels are really full will make it more difficult to hold.

- If you’re doing coffee enemas regularly it’s important to nourish your colon because it can get dehydrated or irritated. So maybe do some with just water or you can do oil too.

- Make sure you are using filtered water and that there are no coffee granules present (the French press should take care of this)

- Please be sure to prime the tubing because if there is air in it, it can leave you gassy

- Nourish your body, doing coffee enemas is not an excuse to eat however you want. Eat colorful, plentiful food from the earth and drink fresh juices!!! Honor your sacred body and rehydrate it to the best of your ability

- Coffee enemas are not for everyone, if you don’t like doing them, then don’t! I will also have a castor oil blog post coming soon which is a gentle and noninvasive way to detoxify your liver.
