The 3 Levels of Reiki Explained: Understanding Your Path to Energy Healing & Mastery

Writer: Nicolette MarieNicolette Marie

So, you’re curious about Reiki and wondering how the whole attunement thing works? Maybe you’re drawn to energy healing but don’t know where to start—or you’re already on your healing journey and feel like Reiki might be your next step. Either way, angel, you’re in the right place.

Reiki is a gentle but powerful energy healing practice that anyone can learn, and it’s taught in three levels (although some people will say there's 4 levels). Each level deepens your connection to Reiki energy, and by the end, you can even become a Reiki Master Teacher (which is what some people call level 4) and attune others! But don’t worry, we’re taking this one step at a time. Let’s break down the three levels of Reiki, what they mean, and how you can get attuned.

how to become a reiki master, how to become a reiki practitioner, reiki programs online, energy healing

Reiki Level 1 (Self-Healing & Awakening to Energy)

Reiki Level 1, also called the First Degree (Shoden in Japanese), is where your Reiki journey begins. This level is all about self-healing and getting familiar with how energy flows. When you receive your Reiki Level 1 attunement, you’ll be connected to the Reiki energy, allowing you to channel it through your hands for yourself and friends, family, etc.

I want to reiterate that Reiki Level 1 is mostly for you. If you were to only do Reiki Level 1, you cannot take clients or start a business.

What You’ll Learn in Reiki Level 1:

  • The history of Reiki and how this ancient practice works

  • How to channel Reiki energy using your hands

  • Hand positions for self-healing and practicing on others

  • How Reiki works on the physical, emotional, and energetic body

All of this is the bare minimum, which is what most Reiki trainings offer (especially the one day or weekend long programs). In my Reiki I & II Attunement & Certification Program called OPEN, you also learn about the different layers of the energy body, we deep dive into the chakras, shadow work, you learn energy hygiene techniques, understanding dis-ease, you learn about energetic blocks, and so much more.

In my program we focus on your healing, first, so we also do guided meditations and healing experiences, which are crucial because they help prepare your mind, body, and spirit for the attunements.

Again, this level of Reiki is mainly for you—your healing, your nervous system, and your personal energy alignment. It’s the foundation of everything else to come.

Reiki Level 2 (Practitioner Level & Distance Healing)

Reiki Level 2, or the Second Degree (Okuden in Japanese), is where things get even more magical. This level is for those who want to deepen their Reiki practice and start offering healing to others, whether informally or as a professional Reiki practitioner. You’ll also learn how to send distance Reiki, meaning you can channel energy to someone no matter where they are in the world (yes, really!). Distance Reiki also means being able to send Reiki to past and future versions of yourself, your clients, or situations.

So to reiterate when you are a Level 2 practitioner you can start your own business or add Reiki to your existing business!! It doesn't matter if you are a mindset coach, therapist, women's wellness coach, breathwork facilitator, sound healer, esthetician, massage therapist, etc. Reiki can be a wonderful added modality to your business and existing/future offers!

It can also set you apart from others in your niche. For example: if you are a mindset coach what is going to set you apart from all the other mindset coaches out there is that you don't just work with the mind -- you work with it all, body, mind, and spirit -- and this will create deeper transformations for your client (AKA better results means more people will want to work with you, which means more clients and more success for you).

What You’ll Learn in Reiki Level 2:

  • Sacred Reiki symbols that amplify healing energy

  • How to send Reiki across time and space (distance healing)

  • How to work with emotional and mental healing

  • Ethics & best practices for offering Reiki to others

Just like Reiki I, this is literally the bare minimum and I say that not to be like "you should take my program and no one else's," I say this to empower you so you can make a decision that feels good when deciding what program to go with. I know the one day $50-$500 programs sound alluring because they are promising you certification and the ability to start a business after a day of training, but they are not ethical nor practical.

There is so much more to learn when it comes to both Reiki I & II, which is why in my program you learn all of the above but you also learn about the nervous system, moving through triggers, cord cutting, intuition, how to protect your energy, set up client sessions, way more tools and techniques (byosen scanning, chakra balancing, etc), and so much more. We also continue to focus on your own healing, first, through the guided meditations, ceremonies, healing experiences, guides/workbooks, etc.

It is so important to vet the program and Reiki Master you are going to get attuned by. (Another blog post will come soon on what to look for in a program and Reiki Master).

At this level, you can start charging for Reiki sessions if you choose, making this a beautiful way to integrate energy healing into your life and even your business.

Reiki Level 3 (Reiki Master & Master Teacher Level)

Reiki Level 3, often called Reiki Master (Shinpiden in Japanese), is the final level of Reiki training. This is where you step into mastery, deepen your connection to the energy, and (if you choose) learn how to attune others to Reiki. (You may hear some people refer to "Level 4" as the Reiki Master Teacher level, but most people lump this in with Level 3)

This level isn’t just about teaching—it’s also about personal transformation. You’ll be attuned to the Master Symbol, which enhances your healing abilities and spiritual connection. Some people take Reiki Level 3 for their own personal journey, while others feel called to certify and attune new Reiki practitioners.

What You’ll Learn in Reiki Level 3:

  • The Master Symbol, which amplifies Reiki energy

  • Advanced techniques for deep healing and energy work

  • How to attune others to Reiki and become a teacher

  • How to build a Reiki business (if that’s your path)

I know you are starting to get the gist now that what is bulleted above is just the bare minimum and, again, I'm not saying this to be like "OMG choose me, pick me, pick my program" I'm saying it because it is in your best interest to know this because then you can make an informed decision when it comes time to decide what program you want to spend your hard earned money on. Most people don't even know they are missing out on so much information (but hey, I guess that's good for my students because it will set them apart from those who went through the one day trainings).

In my Reiki Master Training I teach you how to use Reiki for guidance, many energy techniques (using a crystal, crystal grid, the Reiki moving meditation, etc.) I also deep dive into the business side of Reiki -- we build the blueprint of your business, talk about social media marketing, how to create offers, determine pricing, how to balance feminine and masculine energetics, and so much more. One of my student's literally stopped me during a class to say "This is the best business course I have ever taken."

So at this Level, you’re not just practicing Reiki—you’re embodying it.

A brief breakdown of each level

What You Learn in Each Level Will Depend on What Type of Reiki You Are Getting Attuned To...

This is also good time to also share that there are different types of Reiki -- Usui, Holy Fire, etc. -- and your program and attunements will look different depending on what type of Reiki you are becoming attuned to. Usui and Holy Fire Reiki both have the same levels (1-3), but do the attunements a little bit differently, both are equally as effective. We can break down the different types in another blog post if that would be helpful, so just let me know in the comments.

The curriculum of what your program includes will depend on the type of Reiki you are becoming attuned to. My programs are a mix of Usui and Holy Fire Reiki. This really takes the Master Level training to the next level, because you learn so much more about Holy Fire, the concepts it comes with, more energy healing techniques, how to use a crystal grid, and so much more. You also get more than just a single Usui Master Attunement. In order to become a Holy Fire Reiki Master you have to receive 4 Master Ignitions (which are kind of like attunements). The Ignitions are what really strengthens my student's Reiki energy making it more powerful and effective. They also fully open my students gifts (intuition, light language, ability to read the Akashic Records, understand and teach advanced Astrology, etc.)

The reason I made my own Attunement & Certification Programs is because I had to go through MANY trainings to feel complete because, again, most Reiki trainings are a single day or weekend long. My first training I went to was a 6 hour day where we learned Reiki I & II and I left being like, "now what..." It is not possible to leave a single day training feeling confident, proficient, and ready to start a business.

I also made my attunement programs because they are what I wanted when I was looking to become attuned ----- I wanted a program that was more than the bare minimum, I wanted a program that focused on my own healing first, I wanted a program that was more than a day or weekend long and I couldn't find ANY, so I made my own.

I have now taken over 50 women through these programs and each and every single one of them comes back with "I feel like I have jumped timelines after going through these programs."

Which Reiki Level Is Right for You?

If you’re just starting, Reiki Level 1 is the place to begin. It’s a beautiful way to connect with your own healing and experience Reiki’s benefits firsthand.

If you’re already attuned to Reiki Level 1 and feel called to help others and start a business, Reiki Level 2 allows you to work with clients and send distance healing.

Some people offer each Level separately because they think you should take time to sit with each level and some people combine Levels one and two, which I think is more than ok. All of this to say: go with what resonates and feels right for you.

But a tip: avoid any programs that offer all 3 at once. You should definitely have a solid break between Level 2 and 3 (sit with being a practitioner for at least 4-6 months before you go to the master level).

And if you’re already attuned to Reiki Levels 1 & 2 and you are ready to go all-in and teach Reiki yourself, Reiki Master Level is your next step.

The beauty of Reiki is that you can go at your own pace—there’s no rush. Trust your intuition and follow what feels right for your journey.
