The first time I heard someone say they got "attuned" to Reiki I was like, "what does that even mean?" Was it some kind of ceremony? Was it just a blessing? A secret club? I genuinely had no idea. And if this is you, too, don't worry we are going to break it down in this blog post.
A Reiki attunement is what connects you to Reiki energy—it’s the process that allows you to channel this healing energy for yourself and others. And trust me, it’s not just a simple training or course. It’s an energetic initiation, a deep spiritual activation, and, for many, a life-changing experience.
Let’s break down exactly what a Reiki attunement is, the difference between Usui and Holy Fire Reiki attunements, and why getting attuned might be one of the best decisions you ever make.
What Is a Reiki Attunement?
A Reiki attunement is a sacred energetic process where a Reiki Master opens your energy channels so you can connect with and channel Reiki energy. Think of it like tuning a radio—you’re adjusting your frequency so that Reiki energy flows through you naturally.
A lot of people like to describe Reiki as a spiritual blessing and while, yes, that is true, it's more accurate to say that it is a powerful clearing process. During an attunement the Reiki energy is working directly with you and it is removing what does not vibrate at the same level as the Reiki frequency (which vibrates at the level of unconditional love 🥲), so that you are able to channel the Reiki energy.
After you go through the attunement process (which we will talk about soon, don't worry) you go through a 21 day detox. During this 21 day detox the energy is working with each chakra blasting out density and what doesn't vibrate at the same level as the Reiki frequency. It starts at your root chakra, stays there for 3 days, clears out what doesn't vibrate at the same level and then it goes to the sacral chakra for 3 days and does the same thing and then the solar plexus, heart chakra, and so on so that by the end of the 21 days you are a clean and clear channel for the Reiki energy to flow through.
Once attuned, Reiki isn’t something you have to "try" to do—it simply flows whenever you intend to use it. You can use it for self-healing, helping others, and even for things like manifestation and energetic protection. And the best part? Once you’re attuned, Reiki stays with you for life.
How Does a Reiki Attunement Work?
The Reiki attunement process varies depending on the type of Reiki you’re learning. The two most common styles are Usui Reiki (the traditional form) and Holy Fire® Reiki (a more modern evolution). Both are powerful but have slightly different attunement experiences.
Usui Reiki Attunement
In a traditional Usui Reiki attunement:
The Reiki Master performs sacred rituals, including using Reiki symbols and hand placements to open your energy channels.
The process is in-person, with the teacher working directly on your aura and chakras.
Many people feel warmth, tingling, or deep relaxation as energy shifts within them.
Afterward, you may experience an energy detox for a few days as old patterns and blockages release.
Holy Fire® Reiki Attunement (Placements)
Holy Fire® Reiki does attunements differently, using what’s called a Placement:
Instead of the Master physically attuning you, the energy itself flows directly to you, guided by your higher self.
It can be done in-person or online, making it more accessible.
The process is often gentler and more deeply healing, bringing a sense of divine peace.
Many students experience profound spiritual awakenings, visions, or emotional releases during the Placements.
Both types of attunements are equally powerful—you’ll be able to channel Reiki energy no matter which method you choose! A common misconception I hear from women looking to become attuned is that they think an in-person attunement is stronger than receiving one online, but that’s not the case. The biggest difference lies in the process itself.
With a Usui Reiki attunement, the Reiki Master acts as a direct channel, transferring the energy into you through physical touch. This must be done in person, as the Master uses specific symbols and hand placements to open your energy channels.
In Holy Fire® Reiki, the attunement—called a Placement or Ignition—feels more like a guided meditation that gradually fades into silence. During this time, the energy works with you directly, continuing to integrate for about 15-20 minutes. Unlike Usui Reiki, the Master does not need to touch you, as the energy is channeled from a higher level of consciousness and flows straight to you.
Ultimately, it’s not about which method is better—it’s about what resonates with you and how you feel called to receive your attunement. ✨ In my programs I attune women to both levels of Reiki using the Holy Fire attunement method.
